Information About Laconia Region
Lakonia is the most southern prefecture in Peloponnesus and mainland Greece in general. It is bounded by the Myrtoo Sea to the east, the Messiniako and Lakoniko Gulfs to south. It has two mountain ranges, Taygetos which is the highest mountain in Peloponnesus (2407m) and Parnonas (1961m).
Between them lies the valley of the Evrota river and the capital of the prefecture, Sparta. Lakonia borders to the north with the prefecture of Arkadia and to the west with Messinia. The only inhabited island of Peloponnesus, Elafonisos, belongs to Lakonia. The Prefecture of Lakonia was created when the two older prefectures of Lakedemonia and Lakonia were combined.
The prefecture is 3636 m2 and has a population of 99,637 according to the 2001 census (118,660 in 1961). The capital of the prefecture is Sparta with a population id 15,828. Other important cities are Gythio, Molai, Skala, Areopoli, Oitylo, Mystras, Pyrgos Dirou, Gerolimenas, Vatheia, Menemvasia, Neapoli in Vatika, Vresthena.
The main occupation, either as a first or second source of income, is farming and the production of oranges, olives and olive oil. A significant number of people are also cattle farmers while the tourist business is also quite advanced during the summer season, mainly in the areas of Mystra, Spilea Dirou, Vatheia, and the coastal areas of Menemvasia, Gythio, Elafonisos and the Akrotenaria area.
