The prefecture of Achaia is located in the northwestern Peloponnese. It covers 3.271 sq. klms, a population of 327â€™316 (2001) and is the main gateway connecting Greece and the rest of the EU countries, through the port of Patras. The prefecture of Achaia is under the administration of Western Greece along with the prefectures of Etoloakarnania and Ilia. It covers 29% of the prefecture of Western Greece and 43% of its population.
It consists of the provinces of Patras, Aigialeias and Kalavryta and is separated into 21 municipalities and 2 Communities. Capital of the prefecture is the city of Patras which is the 3rd largest urban center of the country. Achaia combines natural beauty and cultural development. It is a part of Greece that illustrates the Hellenic heritage and modern culture.
The capital city, Patras, the ancient city of Patreas, is the port that connects Greece with Western Europe and stands out for its architecture and street layout. The rich historical and cultural heritage of Patras and the dashing modern pace of life, give a distinct character.
